The Wine Cellar
Under the Legation house is the cellar, built for wine storage. Dubois was instrumental in abolishing all duties on French wine imported to the Republic of Texas.
From the cellar, the hand-hewn local lumber beams are still visible, originally installed in 1840 for the post and beam foundation.
In the last restoration work which strengthened the beams supporting the building, fill dirt was removed. Jim Schmidt, a Museum Associate has been sifting the dirt and has uncovered artifacts including ceramics, and animal bones.
